C 61/77 38 Edward III (1364-65)
Introduction.
The roll for 1364-1365 is once again a short roll, consisting of only four membranes, and is very lacking in the variety of entries entered on to it. Indeed the bulk of the entries are letters of protection and of general attorney for those who were either already in the new principality in the company of Edward of Woodstock, or those about to join him there. Indeed the lack of diversity of entries is perhaps a strong indication of the assumption of the governance of the principality by the prince, and the king's restraint in intervening in his son's autonomous jurisdiction.
The letters of protection and attorney are generally of little interest, being very formulaic. However, although the names of their recipients reveal quite a number of individuals with long established military ties with the prince, some at least reveal that the prince was accompanied by a not inconsiderable number of individuals who were not going for their martial skills. Whilst this is of course of no real surprise, it is still useful to register the number of clerks going or staying with the prince, and also a handful of individuals who seem to have urban, perhaps mercantile roots. Five clerks can be found amongst those receiving letters of protection, and/or general attorney - John de Askham, parson of Bradeway, John de Carleton , parson of Elton, Anthony de Roos, parson of Goldsborough, William de Packington, parson of Burton Overy, and William de Osmaston, parson of Wishaw. 1 Those with urban roots include John Clerk of Southampton, and John atte Ram of London. 2
Other business is rather scarce. The king facilitated the sending of 200 horses to his son the prince in Gascony, by ordering the provision of feed and litter for the horses whilst they awaited their passage in Devon and Cornwall, and also hurdles for their shipping. He also ordered the arrest of ships. However, this was all to be done at the prince's expense, for his money to be paid up front. 3 The king further aided the prince in licencing his export of smoked herring for the sustenance of his followers. 4 The king was also concerned to collect debts and other monies owed to him in the duchy from the time before his creation of the principality. 5 Otherwise the king showed very little interest in interfering in the principality, except for one order to the prince to deliver the prévôté of Barsac to Nicholas de Lovaigne, which the king had granted to Lovaigne in 1352. 6
For some reason the king also made provision for John de Delves to go to the duchy, ordering the arrest of ships. 7 Although Delves was an important member of the prince's retinue, it is unclear why the king was prepared to make special provision for him, when many others also going at that time presumably had to make their own provision for passage.
Finally, there are a number of grants of licences to take goods to Gascony. In immediately previous rolls this has been predominantly grain. In this roll there is one such licence for grain, 8 but twelve for the carriage of various kinds of cloth. 9 It is not entirely clear why there is this switch from victuals to cloth.

6 March 1364 . Westm' Westminster . For Guichard d'Angle, kt .
Order to Ciryce Guillaume de Séris, kt , and Master Bernat Brocas , whom the king has assigned to levy for his use the rents, dues and other debts which are owed to the king in the lordship of Aquitaine from before the king's grant to Edward [of Woodstock], prince of Aquitaine and Wales , to view the petition of Guichard d'Angle, kt , hear his complaint, and diligently obtain information on the contents of the petition, and if they find by that information that Angle ought not to pay and restore the rents and other dues that he received from La Rochele La Rochelle , the Insula Oleronis Île d'Oleron and other places in the Xancton' seneschalcy of Saintonge , and that his lands were seized because it had been alleged that he ought to pay it, and for no other reason, then they are to deliver them to him without delay. If they find that he ought to pay the same, and Angle finds sufficient security to answer to the king for the same, just as they agree with him, then they are to deliver his lands to him on that security, if the lands were seized for this reason and no other.
On the behalf of Angle it has been greatly complained that Séris and Brocas alleged that Angle received the rents, issues and emoluments, after the grant of the same to the king by the king of France according to the form of the peace made between them, and he detained them, though those rents ought to have pertained to the king and he should have answered to him for them, and Séris and Brocas took all the lands that Angle and Guichard his son, had in the seneschalcy, into the king's hands, and they are still retained there until the king is satisfied for the rents, issues and emoluments. This fully appears in Angle's petition which was shown to the king, and which he sends to Séris and Brocas enclosed under the great seal, and Angle has requested remedy, and the king wishes justice to be done.

The king granted the same on 1 February 1362, by his special grace, to Lovaigne for his life, in the same way that the lord of Bydos Budos held it by the king's grant, just as is more fully contained in the king's letters patent on the. 1
