C 61/126, 13 and 14 Henry VI (1434-1436) .

Introduction.

As the previous rolls, this short roll has several licences granted to Englishmen to transport wheat to Gascony 1 In addition, there is one licence to transport woollen cloth to Bayonne. 2

There are also several letters of protection, the most interesting being the letters granted to a Gascon living in England allowing him to buy wine in Gascony and import it into England, 3 and those granted to the archbishop of Bordeaux Pey Berland for his travels to England. 4

Several appointments are recorded: Thomas Clifton as mayor of Bayonne; 5 Master Arnaut Carles as a member of the king's council in Bordeaux; 6 and three Gascons, including the influencial Bernat Angevin, as judges of the superior court of Aquitaine. 7 A Bayonnais servant of Bernat Angevin received several rights in his hometown. 8 The castellany of Saint-Macaire was entrusted to the Gascon, Ramon-Guilhem de Lanau, and the prévôté of Saint-Sever was granted to the Englishman, John Par. 9

A special commission of oyer et terminer was appointed by the king to determine whether the whole inheritance of the late Bérart III d'Albret (d. 1379) should fall to his nephew Bertran III, lord of Montferrand. 10

Following the pardon granted on 7 April 1434 to several citizens of Bordeaux guilty of 'rebellion and riots', Henry VI ordered the mayor of Bordeaux to proclaim this remission in his city. 11

Whilst there is no obvious connection with Gascony, one entry gives us interesting information about trade in England, Flanders and Zeeland by merchants of Genoa and mariners from Portugal. 12
