Cheyney was rector of St Werburgh, Hanbury, was treasurer of John of Gaunt's household from 1374 until around 1379, and receiver of Gaunt's honour of Tutbury between 1380 and 1383 (Somerville, History of the Duchy of Lancaster, i, pp.365, 381. Parson of Hanbury, Staffs. Going to Aquitaine, and staying there in the company of John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster, in 1371.
