Mayors and vicars of Bayonne (1313-1451)

The following list is of the mayors, except when the title of vicar is indicated. A vicar of Bayonne was a mayor of Bayonne who was not designated by the seneschal of Gascony according to usual process. A governor of Bayonne was someone acting as mayor on behalf of an appointed mayor. The election of a new mayor normally took place in April of each year. The following list is largely derived from Balasque, J. and Dulaurens, É, Études historiques sur la ville de Bayonne, vol. 3, (Bayonne, 1875), 623-30, based on original documents mentioned there, and also from evidence from the Gascon rolls.

Per-Sans de Jatxou (1 April 1313-1314)

The selection was apparently disputed and not properly instituted (RG IV, no. 1177, p.330). It is possible that the office was taken into the king’s hands as a result (RG IV, no. 1282, p.361).

Lop-Bergunh de Bordeaux, or in Gascon Bordèu (6 Nov. 1314-1317)

Apparently granted the office after a period when the office had been in the king’s hands (RG IV, no. 1282, p.361). The office was clearly considered to be still in the king’s hands, for an enhancement of the grant made to Bordeaux, was made on 8 October 1317 (RG IV, no. 1706, p.497).

No information for 1318.

Pélegrin Duviella (1391-1392)

By December 1392 Duviella was out of office. He had been appointed in an irregular fashion, the king having nominated over the usual election process. However, he was allegedly illegally removed from his  office of mayor, and according to Duviella's complaint, the community replaced him with Bidau de Saint-Jean. Duviella's complaints, if true, suggest that he was the victim of factional infighting in Bayonne, with his goods and property being seized (entry 22 in C 61/103).
