C 61/68 30 Edward III (1356-57)

Introduction.

The Black Prince, appointed lieutenant of the duchy by his father in July 1355, had returned to Bordeaux in mid December 1355 after his great campaign across Languedoc. In early July 1356 he began a new campaign northwards from La Réole, a campaign which culminated in the battle of Poitiers on 19 September (although the battle is not mentioned on the roll). This roll mainly deals with measures taken in preparation for this campaign. There are, for instance, several letters of protection and letters of general attorney for members of the army, as well evidence of efforts to send reinforcements, such as the orders to various sheriffs to find 100 mounted archers to be sent to the duchy. 1 Purchase of horses in England was carried out by a representative of the prince. 2 We also find bows, arrows and strings sent to Aquitaine from England. 3 In addition various victuals were purchased and sent to the prince in Gascony: 4 60 smoked hams 5 and some salt fish. 6 As usual in such circumstances, ships of various capacities were requisitioned to transport troops, horses and victuals. 7 Mariners were also requisitioned for the transport of the earls of Suffolk and Salisbury. 8 There was also provision of hurdles for ships of the port of Plymouth to transport horses to Gascony. 9

The roll also reveals something of the Prince's rule of the duchy, especially how Bayonne seems to have taken advantage of his presence to enhance its position. The community of Bayonne wanted to control its neighbouring region, stretching to the mouth of the river Adour then situated at Capbreton, the baylies of Gosse and Seignanx, as well as the baylie of Labourd, whose nobles were often in conflict with the men of Bayonne. For this reason, the latter had requested the king to unite these baylies with the city, 10 a long term goal for Bayonne that would be never implemented. The citizens of Bayonne were particularly upset by an arbitration made by the lord of Albret which they considered too much in favour of the men of Labourd. 11 But they succeeded in having confirmed, presumably in response to a challenge, their exemption from paying taxes for goods brought to Bordeaux. 12

8 February 1356 . Novum Castrum super Tynam Newcastle upon Tyne . Concerning the citizens of Bayonne .

Order to Edward [of Woodstock], prince of Wales , king's captain and lieutenant in the duchy of Aquitaine, to inquire with his council about the state of the baylies and prévôtés [mentioned below] and send this information to the king under the king's seal used in the duchy. Then the king will see with the advice of this council what should be done on this matter. The mayor and the hundred peers of the city of Bayonne have supplicated the king, as the baylies of the lands of Gosse , Seinhany Seignanx and Laburd Labourd , and the castellany and prévôté of Bayonne are very close, and as they are not united, and several dissents, debates and damages have occured and still often happen, to unite forever these baylies and prévôtés for the king's benefit and for the tranquility of the inhabitants of these baylies and prévôtés.

7 February 1356 . Novum Castrum super Tynam Newcastle upon Tyne . For the mayor, jurats, hundred peers and the community of the city of Bayonne .

Order to Edward [of Woodstock], prince of Wales , king's captain and lieutenant in the duchy of Aquitaine, to hear the appeal of the mayor, jurats, hundred peers and the community of the city of Bayonne and terminate it. He has to forbid all the persons of Bayonne as well as all the men of the land of Labourd to do anything against the peace during this appeal and make impediments against the final decision, and he has to punish them if they do it in order to give an example to others. The mayor, jurats, hundred peers and the community of the city of Bayonne have shown to the king a petition where they explained that between them and the men of the land of Labourd many dissensions, hate, rancours and capital injuries were raised, and several slaughters of men, 1 internal war, fires and damages occured, with the result that they appointed as an arbitrator Bernat-Etz [V], Lebreto, de lord of Albret , Tartasii vicomte of Tartas , but this latter rejected the petitions of Bayonne and favoured the adverse party 2 in his proclaimed arbitration, and so they have been since offended several times; so that the mayor, jurats, hundred peers and the community of the city of Bayonne have appealed on this arbitration to the king as king of England and France, duke of Aquitaine within the due term. 3
