C 61/44 6 Edward III (1332-33)

Introduction.

After the taking of the town of Saintes by the French in 1330, Edward III and his government tried to prevent any further French encroachments in the duchy of Aquitaine as well as any threats of future war with the king of France. Thus repairs to the castle of Saintes, partly demolished by the French in 1330, were ordered. 1 Necessary repairs to the castle of Bayonne were also carried out. 2 A toll granted by Edward II was confirmed to the inhabitants of Hastingues in order to enclose their bastide which was situated close to the kingdom of Navarre and the vicomté of Béarn. 3 A ‘king’s mason’ had been appointed to repair buildings in the castles of Blaye and Montendre, and his appointment was renewed during the king’s pleasure. 4

Two English ecclesiastics were sent to France to meet with delegates of the king of France to hear complaints about the ‘stormings and occupations’ committed by both sides during and after the war of Saint-Sardos, indicating that the aftermath of this war continued to have an effect. 5

Ramon Durand, who had been banished from the kingdom of France by the king of France after the war of Saint-Sardos, was reappointed as seneschal of the Landes. 6 But Durand complained about the taking of the castle of Guiche, which he had bought from its lady, by the vicomte of Tartas when he was absent at Bordeaux. This seriously jeopardized his attempt to establish his own family in Labourd. The narrative of his petition on this matter is particularly vivid. 7

Several prévôtés of the Landes and jurisdictions in the Entre-deux-Mers were granted to Arnaut-Guilhem de Got, called Basque, for his losses in Périgord when he had resisted the French. 8 Got was granted the privilege to carry arms with 15 men-at-arms and 50 serjeants-at-arms throughout the duchy of Aquitaine. 9

Bernat Bidau, the king’s maker of the artillery in the castles of the duchy of Aquitaine, was paid for 31,000 quarrels which were delivered to the king’s castles of Bordeaux and Montendre. 10 Other Gascons were involved with the sale of these iron quarrels. 11 Following Bidau’s complaint, the houses assigned to his office had to be repaired. 12 He was reappointed to this office with the customary wages, but at the king’s pleasure despite the fact he requested to be appointed for life. 13

Several entries concern Arnaut II de Durfort, a staunch supporter of the Anglo-Gascon regime who had been banished by the king of France at the end of the war of Saint-Sardos. At the request of Durfort, all the processes begun in Agenais by the bayle and consuls of Penne-d’Agenais had to be brought before the seneschal of Gascony. 14 This seneschal had to appoint a new juge-mage of Agenais, the current holder of the office (Master Bertran de Coudène) being suspected of partiality by Arnaut II de Durfort. 15 Letters of pardon for all lawsuits were granted to Arnaut II de Durfort, his son Arnaut III and some of his men. 16 The same seneschal was ordered to carry out a secret enquiry into citizens of Penne-d’Agenais accused by Durfort of attacking him and his men, and killing some of them. 17 All Durfort’s goods were restored to him despite his banishment by the king of France after the war of Saint-Sardos. 18 Because of all these problems, as well as because of wages owed to him, Arnaut II de Durfort had gone to England, met the king and was granted letters of protection to return to Aquitaine. 19 He had built up debts in London, no doubt arising out of his stay there. 20

As the king was planning to go to Ireland in order to fight enemies there, he commissioned his Gascon butler Arnaut Micol to provide him with 600 tuns of wine from Gascony. 21

Since Edward II had granted to a late brother of Pope John XXII 600 l.t. to be received each year from the constable of Bordeaux, Edward III granted in exchange the castle of Translay (in Ponthieu) to his son. 22

The king granted to the said merchants or their attorneys to have and receive the said 1,800 l.st. from the first money coming from the custom of Bordeaux as well as from other issues of the duchy as more fully appears in the king's letters patent, and the king ordered to the constable to pay these 1,800 l.st. to Niccolò Marini or the attorney or the attorneys of the said merchants, any allowance of the said custom or the said issues of the king's to the contrary previously directed to him notwithstanding, but the king understood that they did not obtain these 1,800 l.st. because the king ordered the constable in several mandates to pay various sums of money to various men from these issues and custom to the grave damage, loss and delay of business of the said merchants. 1

There was a noble family named Belzunce in Ayherre (arr. Bayonne, dép. Pyrénées-Atlantiques) from c.1275 and there is still a medieval castle of Belzunce in this latter place, hence the nickname of 'Bascol', that is Basque in the 'languedocian' language of the region of Penne-d'Agenais.

The English scribe noted this name as Barbamville , but it is obviously a deformation of Villebramar .
5.
Bascol was a nickname meaning 'Basque'. It is used here as a Christian name.
6.
This part has been higly corrupted by the English scribe. It is possible it is here a member of the family of the lords of Castelnau-Tursan.

It is probably a corruption for 'Bertucat Bernardo', hence in Gascon 'Bertrucat Bernat'.

The texte writes Roberto Guiron de Naalhac .
9.
Claver means in Gascon and 'Languedocian' of Agenais 'treasurer'. It gave the modern family name 'Clavé'. Terrette is the name of a local placename situated in com. Moncrabeau, arr. Nérac, dép. Lot-et-Garonne.
10.
This family name means 'English' in Gascon.
11.
This family name means 'the French' in Gascon.

The text writes Basculo de Ferreyre , but Basculus is the form of the 'languedocian' word bascul or bascol which means 'Basque' and it was used as a nickname to name some men. Here the nickname is used as a Christian name.

26 January 1332 . Westminster . For Pey Descors. 1

Order to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux or their lieutenants to return if it is possible to Pey Descors, king's valet , in the king's name the office of keeper of the dies and the king's coinage in Bordeaux and all things concerning the king's coinage in the duchy with all that pertains to that keepership to be hold in the same way he hold it before the king commissioned this office to Bonguidoy, de Giovanni Bonguidi of Luca Lucca ; and if they cannot return it to him, they should grant another bailiwick in compensation of the said keepership. Formerly, the king granted at pleasure to Descors by his letters patent, because of his service he did often to him and his ancestors, kings of England, the keepership of the dies and the king's coinage in Bordeaux and all things concerning the king's coinage in the duchy with all that pertains to that keepership to be hold by him or a suitable substitute, 2 and after the king granted for five years this office to Giovanni Bonguidi. 3 Thus, the king ordered to the then seneschal of Gascony and constable of Bordeaux to provide the said Descors with a bailiwick in compensation of the keepership, 4 then John de Haustede , seneschal of Gascony, and John de Weston, constable of Bordeaux , having taken fuller information with the members of the king's council of these parts on the value of this keepership, found that this keepership gave 250 l.t. as annual issue and they allocated this sum to Descors on the issues of Sancti Emilionis, de prévôté of Saint-Émilion ; and the same seneschal and Pey de Galician , thereafter constable of Bordeaux, changed the place of this allowance to allocate it on the issues of the customs of Bordeaux to be received and hold each year at Easter and Michaelmas by equal portions as more fully appears in the said letters and allocations, and Descors requested the king to approve this allocation by his letters patent.

8 February 1332 . Waltham Waltham Holy Cross . Concerning certain men delegated to hear the complaints about the lands occupied against the form of the agreement.

[in French]

Grant of power by letters patent to John Travers, Lichefeld canon of the church of Lichfield , and Master Hildesle John de Hillesley, Cicestre canon of the church of Chester to hear with the representatives of the king of France or themselves alone to hear the complaints of all the persons who want to complain about the stormings and occupations made against the agreements made between the kings of England and the kings of France, and to do restitutions and full justice about them. Formerly, Charles IV , former king of France, and the late Edward II made an agreement on the conflicts they had, and thereafter an agreement has been made between Philip VI , now king of France, and the king as more fully appears in this agreement, but certain stormings and occupations have been made by one side or the other against the said agreements, thus the king wants that justice be done for what concerns the king's side.

3 February 1332 . Waltham Waltham Holy Cross . For the king for the resumption into the king's hands of the land of Durfort near to Penne, and the rents and issues of corn and wine at Penne etc. which were granted to Arnaut de Durfort, kt. 1

Order to Oliver de Ingham, seneschal of Gascony and John Travers, constable of Bordeaux , the king having diligently discussed the matter with his council of prelates, magnates and nobles at Westminster, to resume into the king's hands the land of Durefort' Durfort near Penne, and the rents and issues from corn and wine at Penne which pertain to the king, and which are commonly called la bladat and la vynat , with hens, hay and its other appurtenances, and the king's fishery and weir in the river Olti Lot near Penne, together with the fish taken there, and its other profits of the king in the duchy, together with high and low justice ( altum et bassum justiciatus ), and complete and mixed jurisdiction ( merum et mixtum imperium ) and all reliefs ( sporla ), fees, homages, rights, dues, bayles, castellanies, prévôtés and customs which the king has in that land, and also high and low justice in Podium Pinnezium Pépinès near Penne, and in the parishes of Podium Pinnezium Pépinès , Sancti Petri de Cereda Saint-Pierre-de-Sarède , Magavall' Maguebal , Boissola Bousselle , Orador Auradou and Gelzacum , Sanctus Martinus de Perato Saint-Martin-de-Peyrat , Sanctus Justus Saint-Just , Sanctus Thoma de Lynars Saint-Thomas , Gresacum Grézac and Sanctus Fieles 2 which the king lately granted to Duro Forti Arnaut de Durfort, kt , if it is not already in the king's possession without delay, because it has been decided that the grant was made to the grave damage of the king and and the inhabitants of Penne, and against the privileges granted by the king's progenitors to them, and the king, having had the discussion now wishes that the previous order that he made to revoke the grant should remain in force. They are to keep the same in safe custody so that the king should be answered to for the issues and emoluments coming from them just as used to be the case, the grant to Durfort and other orders of the king notwithstanding. The king has assigned to Durfort 500 m.st. to be taken each year by him and his heirs from the issues of the toll at Sanctus Macharius Saint-Macaire until the king is able to provide Durfort with 500 m.st. of land in the duchy a year.

The king has been given to understand that lately, he granted the same to Durfort, having the same up to a value of 100 m. a year in part satisfaction of 500 m. worth of land and issues granted in a certain form to Durfort because of his good service in the duchy. But this was done to the prejudice of the king and the inhabitants of Penne and other adjacent lands, and against their privilege granted by the king's progenitors that they would not be alientated by the king against their will. Because of this, and for other obvious reasons, the king, with the consent of the magnates and others of his council, revoked this grant and ordered the seneschal and constable to resume them back into the king's hands.

Afterwards, Durfort, who explained that he was in possession of all these things according to the king's grant, requested that the king maintain and defend him in his possession. The king, wishing to have justice for himself, the inhabitants and for Durfort, desired to discuss the matter with his council of prelates, magnates and nobles which he had ordered to meet at Westminster on 20 January 1332 to discuss certain great and difficult business, ordered the seneschal and constable to view the letters of revocation with the king's council there, and obtain full information on the reasons for those letters, 3 and the matter was to remain as it was without further execution until the king wrote to them again. 4

Durfort has given the king to understand that after his banishment was proclaimed against him in the court of France 1 because of the peace and agreement between the king and king of France, Coudène, the bayle and consuls began various processes against Durfort and his men, exiling him and confiscating his goods and possessions, and committing many injustices against him and his men, and he has requested that these erroneous processes be revoked. Order to Codena Bertran de Coudène, former Agenn' juge-mage in Agenais and the bayle and consuls of Penne[-d'Agenais] to bring the lawsuits made against Duro Forti Arnaut [II] de Durfort before the seneschal of Gascony. Because they have made various trials against Durfort and his men on some of them who were banished the king ordered the seneschal of Gascony to bring before him all the lawsuits and to survey and examine them as quickly as he is able and if anything had been attempted against Durfort and his men it is to be revoked.

The king has received Arnaut’s complaint that, although he had obeyed the sentence of banishment promulgated by the court of the king of France, on the king’s order, the bayle and consuls had, despite the seneschal’s injunctions to the contrary, begun to proceed against Arnaut and his men, hanging some and banishing others, in contempt of the king. Order to the seneschal of Gascony to do a summary and secret information according to the fors and customs of these parts and to call the king's proctor on the violent actions made by Noalhaco, de Estèbe de Noaillac , the man called Lomotho Lamothe , Johan de Portu Picanull' , Manhano, de Guiraut de Magnan and their accomplices against Duro Forti Arnaut [II] de Durfort and his men, and if it appears that they are guilty of these violences then he should seize their goods and lock up them under heavy guard, and beyond he should act according to the fors and customs of these parts punishing in such a way the said malefactors that it will be an example for the other malefactors. Lately, Durfort made a serious complaint to the king as he had been received under his protection and safeguard with his men, lands, things, issues and all his possessions in the duchy of Aquitaine forbiding to do any harms against them and their goods, but Noaillac, Lamothe, Portu Picanull' , Magnan and some other malefactors have insulted, beat, injured, mistreated Durfort and his men, killed some of them, mutilated some of their limbs and did other various injuries against the king's protection and his peace, without any remedy done according to the fors and customs of these parts by the seneschal or some other king's ministers, whereof the king is much amazed.

Lately, the king granted to Durfort with the assent of the prelates, earls, barons and others with the king in the parliament convened in the fourth year of the king's reign, and wishing to show further grace to him for his laudable service to the king and Edward II and for his damages and losses he suffered during the wars in the duchy, 500 m.st. per annum of lands and issues in the duchy to have and held him and his heirs in perpetuity from the king and his heirs, and thereafter the king granted to him in part of satisfaction of the said 500 m.st. of lands and issues the land of Durefort Durfort situated near to Penna Penne[-d'Agenais] and some others under certain forms to the value of 100 m.st. per annum. But this grant was revoked and put in the king's hand as it was granted at the prejudice of the king's subjects of these parts, so the king granted to Durfort and his heirs these 500 m.st. to be taken each year from the first money coming from the toll of Saint-Macaire until the king is able to provide him with 500 m.st. of lands and issues in the duchy; 1 and if by accident Durfort or his heirs is unable to receive the 500 m.st. per annum from this toll, then he should received the 500 m.st. per year from the issues of the customs of Bordeaux as more fully appear in the king's letters patent. 2

Grant to Duro Forti Arnaut [II] de Durfort of a special grace restoring him to all his movable and immovable goods in the duchy after his banishment by the late Charles IV, king of France . It had been agreed by a treaty between the French king’s counsellors and proctors and the king’s envoys and ambassadors that Arnaut, and others of the king’s subjects in the duchy, should be banished from the kingdom of France for ‘certain excesses’ imputed to them by the French. But the same treaty, and confirmations of it, ruled that all rights of the French to Arnaut’s goods in the duchy should be surrendered. Arnaut is thus to be restored to all his possessions within the king’s lordship, to be held on the same terms and conditions as before the treaty, saving the king’s rights.

Same as above For the king, for obtaining information in a cautious and circumspect manner on the place of Bédorède that was confiscated by the king's grandfather.

Order to the same, that if they proceed in obtaining information about the place of Bedoret Bédorède , then they are to summon the king's council of those parts and the king's defender, and they should proceed in a prudent and cautious manner so that nothing is done to the prejudice or disinheritance of the king.

Lately, Lana Plana Ysarn de Laneplaà, king's serjeant-at-arms and Meliore Melhosa , his wife requested that the king would grant to them the place of Bédorède, which was a possession of Amaubin, formerly lord of the same place and came into the hands of Edward I, late king of England because of Amaubin's felony for killing la Duchee Ramon-Guilhem de Laduch , 1 though the same should have remained to Laneplaà and Melhosa, she being daughter of the late Lane Bertran de Lanne, lord of Lane Lanne and Amaubin's nearest heir, according to the fors and customs of these parts. They requested that the grant be made to them forever in compensation for Laneplaà's service to Edward II, late king of England, and also in recompense for 2,100 l.bord. assigned to Meliora Melhosa's father on the issues of the Insule Oleronis Île d'Oléron , by the late king and which has still not been paid.

The king ordered them to summon the council and to obtain full information on in whose hands the emoluments and profits of the place ought to be, whether there is a castle, fortalice or other building there, and how much the place with its appurtenances are worth a year, and whether the same should remain to Laneplaà and his wife. Because some people have informed the king that, unless he proceeds carefully in this matter, it could be prejudicial and lead to disinheritance, especially since the place came into the king's grandfather's hands for felony as a confiscation, and has been in royal hands for 60 years or more without Melhosa or anyone else claiming it, the king wishes to forestall prejudice and disinheritance and proceed cautiously.

The king has ordered the constable many times to view the bills and to make payment or satisfaction to Bernat and Guilhem-Arnaut, and although both of them have raised the matter with the constable in person or by their attorneys, the constable has put off making satisfaction, and continues to put it off as the king knows from Bernat and Guilhem-Arnaut, about which the king is greatly amazed.

21 September 1332 . Westminster . For the king, so that Arnaut de Durfort does not occupy the lands and rents in the parts of Penne previously granted to him and subsequently revoked. 1

Order to Duro Forti, de Arnaut de Durfort to cease occupying lands around Penne[-d'Agenais] , of which the grant to him had been revoked. The king recalls that lands and rents there had formerly been given to him for his services, in partial fulfilment of a grant of land to the value of 500 m. . But the men of that region had appealed against the grant, claiming that they had a privilege not to be alienated from the king’s immediate dominion. Hence the grant had been revoked, after consultation with the council of magnates of the kingdom, and Durfort given 500 m. from the toll of Sanctus Macharius Saint-Macaire until lands and rents to that value could be found. But he still occupies both lands around Penne and the toll, and is warned that should he continue to defy the king’s and his council’s decision, the king will ensure that other means may be found of implementing the revocation.

20 September 1332 . London . For Ysarn de Laneplaà and Melhosa his wife. 1

Order to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux to cause the baylie of Pontonx to be delivered to Lane Plane Ysarn de Laneplaà, king's serjeant-at-arms , and his wife Melosa Melhosa, daughter and heiress of the late Bertran, lord of Lanne , or their attorney.

Laneplaà, for himself and on behalf of his wife, has shown to the king that lately, at Laneplaà request, the king ordered the John de Haustede, seneschal of Gascony , and Master Galiciano, de Pey de Galician, then constable of Bordeaux , to obtain information and certify the king as to whether payment had been made to the lord of Lanne of the 2,100 l.bord. owed to him, and whether Edward II, late king of England , the king's father, had granted him 100 l. a year to be taken from the insula Oloro prévôté of the Île d'Oléron until the debt had been paid or not. The Seneschal and the Constable certified the king that the lord of Lanne had received no payments, and nor had anyone else on his behalf, and that no satisfaction of any other kind had been given, as is made clear in the letters they wrote to the king. Laneplaà accordingly requested that the king grant him and his wife the holding of the baylie of Pontonx, paying as much for it as others have paid in the past, and receiving every year for it 100 l.bord. until the whole sum has been paid off.

The king, considering the service done by Bertrand to the king's father in Scotland, the continued service of Laneplaà, the certification provided to the king that Laneplaà and his wife have not been satisfied for the 2,100 l.bord. owed to them, and also because Laneplaà has remitted 1,100 l. of the sum owed to the king, has committed the baylie of Pontonx, with all its profits and emoluments to Laneplaà and his wife, paying as much as others have paid to the constable of Bordeaux, they receiving an allowance of 100 l. each year in their farm of the baylie until they have been satisfied of the 1,000 l. . 2 d

20 September 1332 . Westminster . For Arnaut de Montpezat.

Order to the same to obtain full information of the value of the lands and tenements that Monte Pesato, de Arnaut de Montpezat held by the commission, and how much it was worth each year in excess of the 500 l.t.parv. during the time that Montpezat has held it, and send certification of this to the king without delay, so that the king can extend his grace to him over the arrears of the value. In the meantime the seneschal and constable are to supersede their demands to Montpezat to render an account to the king for the value of the land and tenements.

Montpezat has alleged to the king that Edmund de Woodstock, earl of Kent , uncle of the king, then lieutenant of the king's father in the duchy , in recompense for his lands that were taken by the king of France, and other damage that he suffered in the war between the king of France, and Edward II, late king of England , the king's father, assigned to him those lands that were formerly Presshak' Arnaut-Bernat de Preissac 's, an enemy and rebel of the king's father, to the value of 500 l.parv.t. , provided that if the lands and tenements exceeded that value, Montpezat was to answer to the king and his heirs for the excess, and render an account annually to the constable of Bordeaux. The constable is now demanding that Montpezat render an account for the excess for the time that he has held the land and tenements, and Montpezat has requested that the king grant him his special grace concerning the arrears for his good and faithful service. 1

Order to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux that having diligently obtained information on the toll granted to the Hastynges jurats and inhabitants of Hastingues , if they are able to discover that any toll at this place was not owed to the king and his ancestors by hereditary right before the building of the bastide of Hastingues , then they should grant this toll to the jurats and inhabitants of this bastide for the for the maintenance of its closure and the repairing of its bridges and roads for a suitable period. Lately, the jurats and inhabitants of the bastide of Hastingues in the duchy of Aquitaine requested the king that this bastide was founded in a narrow place and a dangerous march of the said duchy and the place where is situated this bastide is very appropriate to be fortified and enclosed, and because of that the seneschal and the constable granted, by the king's order with the advice of the king's council in the duchy, to the jurats and inhabitants to keep the toll on the goods passing at Hastingues as they used to keep it at the time of Edward II . So that all the issues coming from this toll for a period of ten years be put in the closure of this place, and that after these ten years this toll had to be kept on the following manner: two thirds of this toll should be kept for the king and his heirs and the third part of it to finish and maintain this closure, bridges and royal roads of this place. And the jurats and inhabitants bound them to finish this closure, as more fully appear by letters patent under the seal of the duchy and the then constable of Bordeaux. The king ratifies and confirms by his letters these letters patent and ordinnance for the king's profit and honour and the preservation of the said place and all this march.

Lauga was attorney of various men of Gascony to whom Edward I was bound by his letters patent for 400 l.st. , but they were not all paid during the lifetime of Edward I. Then, because of a brief sent by Edward II to the then seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux Lauga received and had by the hand of Ellefeld Richard de Elsfield , then constable of Bordeaux, 51 l. 18 d.st. from the issues of the duchy, and after the death of Lauga the king paid to Pélegrina 40 s.st. of remainder of the 400 l.st. and he ordered to his treasurer and his chamberlain to pay to her 10 m.st. for her expenses in part of satisfaction of these 400 l.st. . 1

22 September 1332 . Westminster . For Johan Colom and Mabilia, his wife.

Further order to the constable of Bordeaux, or his lieutenant, to account with Colum Johan Colom, citizen of Burdeg' Bordeaux , in the name of his wife Mabille Mabilia[Caillau] , daughter and heiress of the late Caillou Arnaut Caillau , for the time that Caillau held the keepership of the insula Olero Île d'Oléron and of the Blavia prévôté of Blaye and the issues that he received from them in that time, and that he should allow what he finds is in arrears from those issues in the sum of 425 l.st. which Edward II owed to Caillau. If any residue of the 425 l.st. is still owed, then the constable is to make payment or an assignment to Caillau's heir elsewhere, according to the tenor of the king's previous order; and the constable will have due allowance in his account for what he pays.

Lately, Colom, in the name of his wife, by his petition exhibited before the king and his council, requested that the king will wish to make payment to him of 425 l.st. owed to Caillau from an annual rent of 100 l.st. formerly granted to him by the king's father for a certain period of time. The king has been given to understand that Caillau had the keepership of the Île d'Oléron and of the prévôté of Blaye for a certain annual farm, and that no acount had yet been rendered for the issues of the same. Previously the king ordered the constable to account with Colom in the name of his wife, for the issues for the time that her father held the keepership, and to make allowance for what is found to be owing in the 425 l.st. owed to Colom by the king's father, and to make payment to Colom of any residue of the 425 l.st. that is still owed, or make an assignment for the same elsewhere, but Colom has now complained that the constable has done nothing on this, as the king accepts. 1

Order to the seneschal of Gascony that having heard the complaint of Durandi Ramon Durand, Landarum seneschal of the Landes , on the taking of the Guyssen castle of Guiche , he should do full and speedy justice in the matter of his complaint just as by right and according to the fors and customs of those parts in order it does not reach again the king because of lack of justice. Lately, Durand complained to the king that he lately acquired the place of Guiche with its appurtenances from Thalèsa, then Guyssen lady of Guiche and he claims that this acquisition was confirmed by the king by his letters patent 1 and that this place was taken under his protection and safeguard, and Durand held peacefully this purchase, when le Breto, de Guitart d'Albret, Tarchazii, de vicomte of Tartas , entered by armed force into this place or motte and fortalice of Guiche through Dorron Bertran d'Orran 2 and some others of his accomplices despite the king's protection and safeguard, and they took and stole Durand's goods and chattels, and Albret kept this motte or fortalice and still keep it in such manner to Durand's great prejudice and damage, on which Durand requested the king to provide him a suitable remedy. 3

Bertran d'Orran was obviously originating from Guiche, as a house from this place was called Orran according to a list written on a document (10 March 1340) where its inhabitants acknowledged the authority of Pey d'Albret as their lord (Archives Départementales des Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Pau, E 170, no.1). See Orpustan, J.-B., Les noms des maisons médiévales en Labourd, Basse-Navarre et Soule , (Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry, 2000).

For the petition to which this is the response, see TNA, SC 8/163/8126. There Durand gave the exact circumstances of this taking. The storming of the castle of Guiche (7 September 1332) was led by Bertran d'Orran with 40 men-at-arms who by night placed themselves at the bottom of the castle next to the moat under some shrubs and stayed hidden there until after 9 of the morning when all the household went outside to have some fun. The men took their opportunity, and entered into the fortress crying “Tartas! Tartas!” and expelled Ramon’s wife, the lady’s companions and her young children letting them take only their clothes, the men taking the gold, silver, jewels, charters and letters kept there. Ramon Durant was then absent because he was at Bordeaux.

Order to the seneschal of Gascony and the constable of Bordeaux or their lieutenants, as he ordered them another time before, 1 to return if it is possible to Pey Descors, king's valet , in the king's name the office of keeper of the dies and the king's coinage in Bordeaux and all things concerning the king's coinage in the duchy with all that pertains to that keepership to be hold in the same way he hold it before the king commissioned this office to Bonguidoy, de Giovanni Bonguidi of Luca Lucca ; and if they cannot return it to him, they should grant another bailiwick in compensation of the said keepership, according to the tenor of the previous order sent to them, any order of the king to the contrary notwhithstanding. Formerly, the king granted at pleasure to Descors by his letters patent, because of his service he often gave to him and his ancestors, kings of England, the keepership of the dies and the king's coinage in Bordeaux and all things concerning the king's coinage in the duchy with all that pertains to that keepership to be hold by him or a suitable substitute, 2 and after the king granted for five years this office to Giovanni Bonguidi. 3 Thus, the king ordered to the then seneschal of Gascony and constable of Bordeaux to provide the said Descors with a bailiwick in compensation of the keepership, 4 then John de Haustede , seneschal of Gascony and John de Weston , constable of Bordeaux, having taken fuller information with the members of the king's council of these parts on the value of this keepership, found that this keepership gave 250 l.t. as annual issue and they allocated this sum to Descors on the issues of Sancti Emilionis, de prévôté of Saint-Émilion ; and the same seneschal and Pey de Galician , thereafter constable of Bordeaux changed the place of this allowance to allocate it on the issues of the customs of Bordeaux to be received and hold each year at Easter and Michaelmas by equal portions as more fully appears in the said letters and allocations, and Descors requested the king to approve this allocation by his letters patent. The king ordered the seneschal and the constable to return him if it is possible in the king's name the office of keeper of the dies and the king's coinage in Bordeaux to be hold in the same way he held it before the king commissioned this office to Bonguidi, and if they were unable to return it to him, they should have granted him another bailiwick in compensation of the said keepership, any order of the king to the contrary notwithstanding, and this has still not been done, as the king is given to understand by Descors, thus this latter requested the king to provide him with a remedy.

16 December 1332 . Ebor' York . For Master Johan Guitard, controller of Bordeaux.

Order to the constable of Bordeaux or his lieutenant to pay from the issues of the duchy the expenses of Master Johan Guitard, controller of Bordeaux , for the bringing of the counter-rolls from Burdeg' Bordeaux to the king's exchequer in Anglia England , and also the wages of his proctor for the time he staid there for the accounting according to the estimate of the seneschal of the duchy, receiving from Guitard his letters of acquittance, and he will have due allowance in his account. Lately, Guitard requested that the king will wish to pay him these expenses, as, at the king's order, he sent through a certain proctor the counter-rolls of his office concerning the account of John de Weston , lately constable of Bordeaux to the king's Exchequer in England as testimony of the account of Weston made to the same exchequer from the time he was constable, and Guitard has not been satisfied of the expenses of his proctor during the rendering of this account.

29 December 1332 . Beverlacum Beverley . For Oliver de Bordeaux.

Order to the constable of Bordeaux to allocate to Burdeg' Oliver de Bordeaux, castellan of the Baiona castle of Bayonne the costs he put in the reparation of the defects of this castle on the farm of the prévôté of Bayonne , receving from Bordeaux the indentures made about that, and he will have due allowance in his account. The king learned that the houses, walls and other buildings of this castle were damaged by lack of repair, so he ordered to the constable of Bordeaux to survey or delegate a lieutenant to repair these defects from the issues of the prévôté of Bayonne, any other allocation on the issues of this prévôté notwithstanding. The constable will put the reasonable costs that the said castellan will have for the repair of these defects in this latter's account where the castellan will have due allowance on his farm of this prévôté, as more fully appear by inspection of the rolls of chancery, and Bordeaux claims he put various costs in the reparation of these defects by virtue of this order. 1

Same as above

Order to the constable of Bordeaux to lease the offices of keeper of the castle and office of the prévôté at Baione Bayonne to Burdeg' Oliver de Bordeaux for five years at the same rate, and on the same terms, as their previous holder. Edward II had committed the keepership and the office of the prévôté to Burdeg' Lop-Bergunh de Bordeaux , who held them for life, but he had resigned and surrendered them in the presence of the king and council. The king now grants them to Oliver de Bordeaux, during pleasure, who is to render the same annual sum for them as Lop-Bergunh had done, for five years, as stated in the king’s letters patent on the matter.
